The brief
The owner wanted two views that looked like lifestyle photography rather than CGI, with loungers, a barbecue, planting and people around the pool, plus empty variants of each.
Our approach
The base renders were heavily post-produced through five rounds of feedback: sky, pool colour, figure placement, stone texture and colour matching between the two views, with composite seams rebuilt at the end.
The result
Four files delivered — each view with and without people.
What this render has to do
The owner of this villa asked for something specific: two views that look like lifestyle photography rather than computer graphics. That changes the brief. A technical 3D exterior render shows a building accurately; a lifestyle render must also feel like a place where someone has just poured a drink and sat down, with loungers, a barbecue under the pergola, planting in bloom and figures at the water's edge. Getting that feeling means thinking like a photographer: where the sun sits, what fills the foreground and where the eye lands first.
Each view was delivered with and without people, giving four files in total. Empty versions suit planning or listing use where figures might distract; the populated versions carry the mood for brochures and websites.
Materials, light and camera
The villa is pale stone with a terracotta roof, shuttered windows, black balcony railings and an arched entrance. A pergola on stone columns shelters the outdoor kitchen, while an infinity-edge pool with a shallow step catches the sky. Terraced retaining walls step down through lavender and clipped shrubs, with olive trees, rough grass and stone stairs with metal handrails below.
Low, warm sun rakes across the stone and gives the textures depth. One view looks along the terraces toward the entrance; the other faces the pool and pergola head on. The sky, water colour and shadow direction were tuned so the two views feel like the same afternoon, which is what a photographer would give you. Reflections in the water and the warm tint on the stone were balanced so the pool looks inviting without glare.
How a set like this is built
The base renders were built first, then post-produced heavily through rounds of feedback. Changes covered the sky, pool colour, figure placement, stone texture and colour matching between the two views. At the end the composite seams were rebuilt so no join shows between layers. Because sun angle, shadow and reflection are controlled in the 3D scene, the retouching can stay subtle and the result stays believable.
That workflow suits any architectural visualisation aiming at photographic realism: render clean, then grade, composite and retouch with a photographer's eye. Our guide to what 3D rendering is explains the stages. For lifestyle work, agree the mood references early, because sky and water colour are the two most subjective choices.
Variants and extras
Figures and props can be swapped without rebuilding the scene. A quiet morning version, a sunset version and a with-guests version can share one model, and each extra needs only its own grade and composite. Variants without people are worth requesting at the outset. Decide early whether figures are wanted at all, how many, and what they should be doing, since placement is easier to plan than to invent late.
Our briefing guide lists what helps most: reference photographs, a list of wanted props, and notes on how many people should appear. 3D exterior renders start from A$445, and our turnaround guide explains how timing works when an image needs heavy retouching.
Questions
Residential exterior: questions clients ask
Populated views carry lifestyle and scale for brochures and websites, while empty views suit listings, planning packs or any use where figures might distract. Producing both together keeps them perfectly matched in sky, light and grade.
We keep the lighting and camera physically plausible, then post-produce sky, water, texture and colour grade with a photographer's judgement. Matching tones between views and rebuilding any composite seams stops the image giving itself away as computer graphics.
Every project includes up to four revision rounds. Heavily post-produced images benefit from using early rounds on big choices such as sky and pool colour, leaving later rounds for figures and fine texture. Clear references at the start keep it efficient.
