The brief
The owner had settled every part of a period-style extension except the window colour, and needed to see black, grey and white options on the actual elevation before ordering.
Our approach
One view was set up and rendered as three variants with nothing else changing, so the only difference on screen is the joinery colour.
The result
Three variants delivered within a week from a single model, so the only difference between the images is the window colour.
What this render has to do
Some renders exist to answer a single question, and this one answers it three times. The extension and porch on a period-style house were fully resolved except for the window colour. Black, grey or white joinery would each change the character of the front, and no sample card can show how a colour behaves against oak-toned timbers and cream render from the street.
So one elevation was built, one camera was fixed, and the windows and doors were swapped between three finishes. Nothing else moves, which means the only difference on screen is the joinery colour. That makes the comparison fair and the decision quick, before an order is placed and the cost of a wrong guess becomes real.
Materials, light and camera
The house is a half-timbered terrace-style front: oak-coloured frames, pale render panels between them, twin gables, a dark slate roof with two chimneys and small rooflights. Pink flowering shrubs, a clipped hedge and a tarmac drive sit in the foreground, under the same bright sky in every image.
The three results behave very differently. Black outlines every pane crisply and gives the front a stronger, more graphic look. White recedes into the render and softens the whole elevation. The grey, a muted tone with a hint of green, sits between them and picks up the slate and foliage. In each image the front door follows the window colour, which is easy to forget when comparing swatches. Because lighting, camera and planting are identical, the eye is forced to compare colour and nothing else.
Variants and extras
Joinery is only one variable. The same single-view approach works for render colour, roof tile, door colour on its own, garage doors, gutters and brick type. Because the model and camera are already fixed, extra variants are quick to produce, and we list each one in the fixed quote so you can see what a comparison costs.
The method also suits small projects where one decision remains. Owners planning granny flats, porches or extensions often have everything settled except a finish, and a three-way comparison removes the guesswork. Our 3D exterior renders can then be reused for the planning pack or the builder's order sheet.
What to watch for in this type of brief
Colour on screen is never identical to colour on a window. Treat the render as a strong guide to proportion and contrast, then confirm the final shade with a physical sample in daylight. Our briefing guide covers what to send, and the 3D rendering cost guide shows how variants are priced.
- Send manufacturer colour names or codes for each option, not screenshots.
- Say whether frames and doors should always match, as they did here.
- Tell us the finish, such as gloss or matt, since it changes how light sits on the frame.
- Keep the options to three or four so differences stay easy to judge.
Questions
Residential exterior: questions clients ask
They are accurate relative to each other, because only the joinery changes. Absolute colour depends on your screen and the real finish, so use the render to choose and a physical sample in daylight to confirm. Colour codes from the manufacturer help us match closely.
Yes, though three or four is usually the most a decision-maker can weigh. Each extra variant is rendered from the same model and camera, so it is quick to add, and we show each one in the fixed quote.
Three variants from one model were delivered within a week here. Exterior renders start from A$445 and typically take 5 to 7 business days, and a multi-variant study of one view sits comfortably inside that window.
